Cambridge, Mr. Dupuis of King's college applied to the Cambridge Corporation "for permission to level about 60 square yards of Parker's Piece, in order to afford greater facility for playing the manly game of cricket." Permission was given on the condition that the levelled piece of ground "be equally for the use of the university and town." The area to be levelled was later extended.
